Abstract
Breast cancer is a well-known sex-hormone dependent tumor and effectively treated by various hormonal therapies. In recent years, the presence of estrogen receptor(ER) has been demonstrated in some cases of cancer in the digestive tracts such as
the
stomach, large intestine, panereas, and the liver, which are nontarget organs of sex hormones. In this study, alcoholfixed, paraffin embedded specimens of 37 human gastric cancers, which were operated in Gyeong-Sang Nationl University Hospital
from
January, 1991 to January, 1992, were immunohistochemically stained with anti-ER-related protein(ERD5) monoclonal antibody. Correlation between ERD5 positive rate and pathologic classification of gastic cancer, T-lymphocyte count in peripheral
blood
and
serum CEA level were analized with Student's t-test and Chi-square test.
Estrogen receptors were positive in 14(58%) of the 24 men and 7(53%) of the 13 women. There was no significant differences of the ERD5 positive rate between male and female patients. In patients of age over 60, ERD5 positive rate was high(66%0,
but
it
was not significant statistically.
There was no significant differences of the ERD5 positive rate according to serosal invasion, lympoh node metastasis, and pathologic classification of WHO and Lauren. Expanding type of gastric cancer in Ming's classification and higher positive
rate983%) than infiltrative type. There was no significant differences of the ERD5 positive rate according to the TNM staging or the degree of differentiation of cancer cells. Gastric cancers with elevated serum CEA level had higher ERD5 positive
rate(76%) than those with normal CEA level(33.3%).
Pre-and postoperative T-lymphocyte count were not significantly different between ERD5 positive and ERD5 negative patients.
In conclusion, ERD5 positive rate was significantly high in the patient with expanding type of gastric cancer in Ming's lassification and elevated serum CEA level.
